The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the GCC Interconnection Authority have signed a $205 million (752 million AED) loan agreement to expand and enhance the power grid connection between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The ambitious project involves constructing a 96-kilometer, 400-kilovolt dual-circuit transmission line, as well as upgrading and expanding several key substations to strengthen cross-border electricity exchange. Once completed, the expansion will increase the power transfer capacity among GCC member states from 2,400 megawatts to 3,500 megawatts. This strategic initiative marks a significant step toward greater regional energy integration, grid reliability, and economic growth within the Gulf Cooperation Council.
